Behind the Scene of Crafts

We were granted the opportunity to capture the process of crafting iconic Japanese artisan products, focusing on the hands of the craftsmen. We delved into the making of ceramics known as Seto ware and cut glass referred to as Edo Kiriko, among others.

  • [Porcelain] Shaping

The plates by m.m.d. are crafted using a technique known as "pressure slip casting," where clay is poured into overlaid plaster molds and then shaped under high pressure. This video showcases the moment of removing the plaster mold.

  • [Porcelain] Glazing

In this scene, they are applying glaze to the products, which have been coated with a water-repellent agent at the bottom to prevent sticking during firing. The two colors of glaze used in the maison line products are carefully applied by hand by artisans, giving each piece a slightly different and unique character.

  • [Edo Glass] Cutting

The process of creating cut glass begins by marking lines on the glass where the cuts will be made, followed by meticulously hand-carving along each line. This labor-intensive task requires a great deal of patience. Once the carving is complete, several rounds of polishing ensue before the cut glass masterpiece is finally realized.
